Want to participate in Earth Hour (Sat 28 March, 8.30pm-9.30pm) but wondering what to do with the kids? Here are some ideas:
Hold a Family Meeting Ok, so switching off the lights for an hour is symbolic, but what about all the other hours in the week, month and years? Hold a candlelight family meeting to discuss why Earth Hour is happening, and brainstorm some activities you can do all year round to help protect Mother Nature and all her creatures (including us humans!)
Here are some suggestions to get you started: unplug appliances when not in use – (especially those with stand-by lights); turn off the tap when brushing teeth; bring reusable bags to the grocery store; segregate waste etc.
Later on, the kids can create a poster with the activities and you can post on the refrigerator or behind the toilet door as a nice reminder.
Family Sing-a-longHave a family sing-a-long. Do you know any nature jingles? If not, why not teach the kids this one (goes to the tune of Row Row Row Your Boat).
We like to recycle For it helps the earth We all play our part for the planet It makes us feel good.
Right, so you’re not impressed with our songwriting abilities? Then as a family spend some time making up your own family Earth Hour jingle. Do our Earth Hour puzzle by candlelightDownload and print out this "Earth Hour" word puzzle the kids can do by candle-light or using a torch. Old fashioned conversation Else, you can just sit in the dark and do what our grandparents and their grandparents and their grandparents used to do. Talk. Spend time bonding and reminiscing about old times and sharing future dreams. -- Whatever you do, switch off the lights on March 28 from 8.30-9.30pm and vote against climate change. |
